In this special Black History Month episode, I continue my limited series Rooted in Black Excellence: Kultivation in Color by exploring the life of Josephine Baker, an icon who chose freedom on her own terms. Her story challenges us to rethink what empowerment looks like when staying means shrinking, and leaving becomes an act of self-preservation.
In this episode, I reflect on Josephine Baker’s early survival, her rise during the Harlem Renaissance, and her decision to leave America in search of dignity and artistic freedom. From Paris stages to global influence, Josephine reinvented herself in a world that allowed her to exist fully — creatively, politically, and personally.
I also examine the cost of that freedom. Despite her global success, America refused to fully embrace her, pushing her toward exile while later benefiting from her activism and courage. From her work in the French Resistance to her role in the Civil Rights Movement, Josephine’s legacy is rooted in resistance and self-definition.
This episode is a reminder that we are not required to stay in spaces that refuse to honor us. Josephine Baker’s life shows that sometimes the bravest form of empowerment is choosing yourself — even when it costs familiarity, approval, or belonging.
